Empowering Leaders Through Inclusive Leadership Training at UKMC

At UK Management College (UKMC), we understand that effective leadership goes beyond management—it involves creating an inclusive, supportive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. To reinforce this commitment, our Heads of Departments, Line Managers, and Team Leaders recently participated in an Inclusive Leadership Training facilitated by Jennifer Marshal from Inclusion UK. This training was a pivotal step in equipping our leadership with the skills to foster diversity, inclusion, and belonging within our college community. 

Why Inclusive Leadership is Essential 

Inclusive leadership is not merely about recognising diversity—it’s about actively shaping an environment where diverse voices are heard and respected. It involves leaders who are not only aware of the differences among their team members but who also champion those differences to drive collaboration, innovation, and growth. 

At UKMC, we believe that inclusive leaders are essential to creating a workplace where staff and students from all backgrounds feel appreciated and empowered. By understanding the unique strengths and experiences of each individual, inclusive leaders can create more dynamic, innovative teams that are better equipped to meet the challenges of today’s educational landscape. 

Key Areas Covered in the Training 

The Inclusive Leadership Training, led by Jennifer Marshal, was comprehensive and aimed at providing our leadership team with actionable insights and strategies for fostering inclusivity. The key areas of focus included: 

1. Identifying and Addressing Unconscious Bias: Leaders were trained to recognise and mitigate unconscious biases that can impact decision-making and team dynamics. By becoming aware of these biases, they can ensure that all team members are treated fairly and equitably. 
2. Creating Inclusive Teams: The training emphasised the importance of building teams where diverse perspectives are encouraged and valued. Leaders learnt how to foster a culture of collaboration, enabling innovative problem-solving through the integration of varied ideas. 
3. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Leaders explored ways to strengthen their emotional intelligence and empathy, key traits in understanding and addressing the diverse needs of their teams. Emotional intelligence is crucial in creating a supportive environment where individuals feel heard and understood. 
4. Inclusive Decision-Making: The training focused on how to involve all voices in decision-making processes, ensuring that a range of perspectives is considered. This helps to make more balanced and inclusive decisions that benefit the entire organisation. 
5. Implementing DEI Strategies: Leaders were provided with practical tools to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies into their day-to-day operations. From setting measurable DEI goals to promoting inclusive practices, the training offered clear guidance on building an inclusive culture. 

The Impact on Leadership at UKMC 

The training has already had a profound impact on our leadership team. By equipping Heads of Departments, Line Managers, and Team Leaders with these essential skills, we are confident that UKMC is taking strides towards becoming a more inclusive, collaborative, and supportive institution. Leaders are now better prepared to create environments where students and staff can contribute meaningfully, knowing that their diverse backgrounds and perspectives are valued. 

Looking Forward 

This training is just the beginning of our journey towards embedding inclusive leadership at every level of UKMC. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we plan to follow up with additional workshops, mentorship programmes, and feedback sessions to ensure these inclusive leadership practices are fully integrated across the college.
